# Why Principles?

A **principle-based approach** fundamentally differs from a **rules-based** approach, focusing on overarching **guidelines** rather than rigid steps or quantifiable targets. Principles offer a framework for **decision-making** and **adaptation**, enabling flexibility across different contexts, whereas rules and metrics often bind individuals to specific actions or outcom[^1]es. By focusing on principles, teams and organisations are encouraged to think critically about **intentions**, underlying values, and the **"why"** behind decisions rather than simply following a checklist or aiming to meet predefined targets.

In contrast, a rules-based system stifles **creativity** and **responsiveness**, assuming that the same rules can be applied universally, irrespective of varying circumstances. While helpful in tracking progress, Metrics can sometimes narrow the focus to **quantifiable outcomes** at the expense of understanding the broader purpose. Over-reliance on metrics can lead to **gaming the system**—where actions are taken merely to hit targets without delivering real value.

Much like double-loop learning, a principle-based approach encourages continuous reflection and adjustment. It fosters **agility**, allowing individuals and teams to adapt principles to their unique environment. This adaptability is crucial in today's fast-evolving business landscape, where rigid adherence to rules or metrics may fail to capture the **complexity** and **nuance** of real-world challenges.

By focusing on core principles, such as **collaboration**, **transparency**, or **customer focus**, teams can better align their actions with the **organisation's broader goals** rather than simply checking off tasks or meeting superficial benchmarks. In this way, the principle-based approach ensures that the **"why"** remains central, guiding meaningful actions and outcomes that are responsive and sustainable.
