The TRACeR method is a structured approach to incident management focusing on logically navigating an incident from detection to resolution and evaluation. The acronym TRACeR stands for Triage, Review, Action, Check, and Resolve, with each step guiding the incident management team through a systematic workflow.
Below is a breakdown of the TRACeR process:
Triage (T): The initial step involves assessing incoming incidents to determine priority, categorisation, and urgency. Triage ensures that resources are directed to the most critical issues first and that each incident is logged with relevant information for tracking.
Review (R): In this phase, a detailed incident analysis is conducted to gather all relevant information. The objective is to fully understand the problem, which may include consulting with other stakeholders or collecting additional technical data.
Action (A): This step focuses on resolving the issue. It includes implementing the necessary fixes or, if required, escalating the incident to more experienced personnel or a higher support level. If the current team is capable, they take appropriate corrective actions.
Check (C): Once an action has been taken, the next step is to verify whether the incident has been successfully resolved. This involves testing and confirming that the solution effectively addresses the problem without causing further issues.
Resolve (R): The final step involves assessing the entire incident management process to identify what worked well and areas for improvement. This resolution may contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and help refine future processes and workflows.
Logical Flow: TRACeR provides a logical flow from identifying an issue to its resolution and beyond, ensuring that incidents are managed thoroughly and effectively.
Scalability: The process is scalable, allowing it to be applied to minor and major incidents, with built-in mechanisms for escalation when necessary.
Continuous Improvement: By including an evaluation phase, TRACeR ensures that lessons learned from each incident are captured and used to enhance future incident response capabilities.
The TRACeR method supports effective incident management by providing a consistent framework for handling incidents from start to finish, ensuring thoroughness and accountability at each step.
