What is Vision?

The Vision defines the target for the organisation.

It is a clear target so that everybody can work towards it. It is an additional, more specific, achievable motivational tool. It starts a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'

It is a socio-psychological phenomenon in which someone " predicts " or expects something, and this “prediction” or expectation comes true because they believe it will, and their resulting behaviours align to fulfil those beliefs.

What was the memorable vision statement JFK defined for the USA space program in the movie? This nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.

What were the main characteristics of this Vision? SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Challenging and Motivating.

Examples

A microcomputer on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software 1977 - Bill Gates - Microsoft 2000

stores by the year 2000 1990s - Starbucks

Be #1 or #2 two in every market. Fix, sell or close to get there. 1981 - Jack Welch - GE

To create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles 2017 - Tesla

S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievaable, Relevant and Time-bound)

Challenging and Motivating

People need a well-defined target to work together effectively towards it

It is time to create your self-fulfilling prophecy
