Agree
The Agree stage in the A6 Agile Coaching model lays the groundwork for an effective coaching relationship. This phase is crucial to ensuring the coach and coachee understand how they will collaborate to achieve the desired outcomes. Establishing this alignment early on creates a foundation of clarity, trust, and mutual accountability.
Activities
Discussing Communication Styles: Both coach and coachee should openly discuss their preferred methods of communication. This includes how often and in what format they will communicate (e.g., email, face-to-face meetings, or online platforms). Address how feedback will be given, especially if the coachee feels things aren’t progressing as expected.
Setting Clear Goals and Expectations: It is essential to define what the coachee aims to achieve. Whether improving team dynamics, enhancing personal leadership, or overcoming specific challenges, having clear goals gives the coaching relationship purpose and direction. The coach also sets expectations for the coaching process, including how progress will be measured.
Session Logistics: Practical details like the frequency and length of sessions should be agreed upon upfront. This includes flexibility for changes when necessary but also sets expectations for consistency in the engagement.
Clarifying Boundaries and Confidentiality: Trust is a critical component of the coaching relationship. Both parties should explicitly discuss and agree on confidentiality, ensuring that any shared information stays within the bounds of the coaching space.
Reflecting on the Value of Coaching Interventions: As part of the initial agreement, it's important to identify when and where coaching will be most valuable. This encourages the coach and coachee to reflect on their unique contributions and recognise areas where coaching can help drive meaningful progress.
Coaching Questions
During the Agree phase of the A6 Agile Coaching model, aligning expectations and building a mutual understanding of the coaching process is crucial. The right questions during this phase help establish clarity, trust, and a shared vision for the coaching journey. Here are some powerful coaching questions to ask during this phase:
"What are your expectations for our coaching relationship?" This helps set the foundation by understanding what the coachee is looking for and how they envision the coaching engagement.
"How would you like us to communicate and provide feedback?" Ensures both parties are aligned on communication styles and preferences.
"What goals do you want to achieve during our time together?" Clarifies the coachee’s objectives and what they hope to gain from the coaching process.
"How will we measure success for you?" Establishes clear metrics or indicators to track the coachee’s progress.
"Are there any boundaries or preferences you'd like to set?" This question helps build a safe, respectful space by acknowledging personal or professional boundaries.
These questions create a framework for the coaching relationship, ensuring the coach and coachee are on the same page about expectations, communication, and goals.
